Cholar dal is a bengali dish made with chana dal, ghee, grated coconut and roasted cashew nuts. It is basically a Bengali version of the North Indian chana dal but with a tasty twist. This dal is perfect for lunch or dinner and will pair well with any type of vegetable dish. Steaming hot chana dal, with a dollop of ghee and some roasted cashews is all you need on a chilly winter day. The dish is low on calories and high on protein, which will give you the much needed energy as well. You can either relish cholar dal with roti, rice or even pooris.

For Garnishing

Step 1

First wash dal twice and drain it. Soak it and keep aside for an hour. Now, combine dal along with the amount of water you usually use to cook dal. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.

Step 2

In a mortar crush green cardamoms, cloves and cinnamon stick. Once done, keep it aside.

Step 3

Heat oil in kadhai. Once hot, add cumin seeds, bay leaf, dry red chilli and turmeric powder.

Step 4

Now add garam masala and grated coconut. Fry on low flame till the raw smell of masala goes off.

Step 5

Now add the dal and salt in the kadhai. Cover and cool till dal becomes tender and attains a slightly thicker consistency.

Step 6

Add ghee, cover it and cook for another 2 minutes.
